NEW BOOKS

California Foundations: An Update on the State’s Grantmaking Community, by Steven Lawrence, approaches its topic from three perspectives. Prepared by the Foundation Center in coordination with the Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy at the U. of Southern California, the study’s first section provides an overview of the status of foundations in the state and major issues facing them. The second section analyzes data from 1999 to 2004, plus figures from 1975 to 2004 showing assets, foundation type, geographic focus, and other variables, and offers information on community foundations and on new foundations created by health-care organizations that changed from nonprofit to for-profit entities. The third part of the publication looks at giving trends in recent years.
