NEW BOOKS

Whatever It Takes: How Twelve Communities Are Reconnecting Out-of-School Youth, by Nancy Martin and Samuel Halperin, describes a selection of efforts across the United States to aid school dropouts. The report focuses on counties and cities in eleven states that seek to encourage young people to return to school or get jobs. In Part I, chapters describe the recovery programs, how they are financed, and what successes they have met, concluding with contact information and resources for further reading about the programs. Part II provides overviews of six national groups, such as Youthbuild and Job Corps, and offers recommendations for donors, legislators, members of Congress, and school administrators.
