Daily News Roundup: Another Nonprofit Defects From Mar-a-Lago

Bethesda Hospital Foundation Becomes 18th Nonprofit to Pull Event From Mar-a-Lago: The group will move its event from the estate owned by President Trump to another Florida club, according to The Washington Post. The organization did not explain the move, but a wave of charities have decided not to hold their fundraising events at the venue after Mr. Trump said that “fine people” rallied with neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., earlier this month.

According to The Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold, only six charities are holding events at Mar-a-Lago in the 2017-18 season, down from 38 the previous season. Lawsuit Alleges Student-Loan Company Mismanages Debt-Forgiveness Program: The attorney general of Massachusetts has accused the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, known as FedLoan, of errors that have kept some people from benefiting from a federal loan-forgiveness program that allows nonprofit and public-service workers to have their federal student debt wiped away after 120 months of payments, reports The New York Times. Google Gives $1 Million to Launch “Latino Nonprofit Accelerator”: The yearlong program, which the Latino Community Foundation will run, will assist organizations with branding and design work, writes TechCrunch. Google.org, the tech giant’s philanthropic arm, will host some workshops for the accelerator.

Donations to Fight Anti-Semitism Ramp Up After Charlottesville: Jonathan Greenblatt, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, tells NPR that donors of all faiths have been supporting his organization, which fights anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, since the violent white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va. Hillary Clinton to Raise Money for Family Foundation: Clinton Foundation officials confirmed that the former presidential candidate, who has no official role at the fund, will make appearances at events and assist with digital campaigns, Buzzfeed reports.

Gates Foundation Gives $25 Million to Virginia Commonwealth University Engineering School: The gift will go toward creating the Medicines for All Institute, which will research ways to make vital medications less expensive and more available across the globe.

Southern Poverty Law Center Takes Heat in Opinion Pages: Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a critic of Islamic fundamentalism but whom the organization has labeled an “extremist,” blasts the group in The New York Times as “an organization that has lost its way, smearing people who are fighting for liberty and turning a blind eye to an ideology and political movement that has much in common with Nazism.”

Meanwhile, Kimberley Strassel calls the organization “an outfit that exists to smear conservatives” in The Wall Street Journal.
