Eli and Edythe Broad Give $100 Million to Yale; Seth MacFarlane Donates $1 Million to Rainforest Group (Gifts Roundup)

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by the Chronicle:
Yale University
Los Angeles philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad donated $100 million through their Broad Foundations to create the Broad Center at Yale School of Management, which aims to develop research, teaching, and policy programs devoted to improving the effectiveness of top leaders in America’s public school systems.
The money will also be used to create a tuition-free master’s degree program in education management and a research program aimed at assembling a large collection of data on public-education leadership. Eli Broad is founding chairman of KB Home, a home builder, and of SunAmerica, a financial-services company. The Broads are prolific givers who have appeared on the Chronicle’s annual Philanthropy 50 list of the biggest donors 14 times since 2000.
Thomas Jefferson University
Sidney and Caroline Kimmel gave $70 million to to expand Jefferson’s research facilities and build the Caroline Kimmel Biomedical Research Building.
Sidney Kimmel founded the Jones Apparel Group in 1970 and the film-production company
Sidney Kimmel Entertainment in 2004. The Kimmels have given extensively to charity over the years and have appeared on the Philanthropy 50 list of biggest donors four times since 2001.University of California, David Geffen School of Medicine
University of California at Los Angeles
Entertainment mogul David Geffen gave $46 million to back the David Geffen Medical Scholarship Fund, which provides full tuition and a living stipend for medical students who would not otherwise be able to pay for a medical degree.
Geffen, who created the scholarship fund in 2012 with a $100 million gift, founded Geffen records and co-founded DreamWorks Studios.
He is a longtime donor to many institutions and has given UCLA more than $450 million to date. He has appeared on the Chronicle’s annual Philanthropy 50 list of the biggest donors five times since 2002.
University of Virginia
Paul Tudor Jones II and his wife, Sonia, donated $40 million for a new building aimed at providing space for students and faculty across disciplines, making it easier for them to interact and collaborate with one another. The new building, called Contemplative Commons, will be within walking distance of eight of the university’s schools.
Paul Tudor Jones II founded Tudor Investment Corporation, a hedge fund in Greenwich, Conn. The couple gave the university $12 million in 2012 for a sciences center. He graduated from the university in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Frank and Barbara Resnek gave $20.2 million to create the Resnek Family Center for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Research, the first U.S. research center focused on the rare liver disease.
Frank Resnek is a partner of Fenway Sports Group, the parent company of the Boston Red Sox baseball team. Barbara Resnik is a retired lawyer.
University of Rhode Island
Alfred and Geraldine Verrecchia donated $15 million for the College of Business. The money will create a scholarship, a fund for students pursuing competitive internships, a faculty chair, and a professorship in artificial intelligence and business analytics. The university will also establish the Alfred J. Verrecchia Center for Business Excellence.
Alfred Verrecchia was chief executive of Hasbro, a toy and board-game company in Pawtucket, R.I. He earned a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the university in 1967 and 1972, respectively.
Morehouse College
Billionaire Oprah Winfrey gave $13 million to support the Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program, which she established in 1989 with a $12 million gift.
Winfrey is a media tycoon who founded the cable network OWN and other media holdings. Her popular Oprah Winfrey Show was syndicated nationally and ran from 1986 to 2011.
She is a serial philanthropist and has appeared on the Chronicle’s annual Philanthropy 50 list of the biggest donors six time since 2003.
University of Pennsylvania Libraries
Arnold and Deanne Kaplan donated $12 million to endow a post in Judaica digital humanities, support research fellowships, and endow an acquisitions fund.
Arnold Kaplan retired from UnitedHealth Group, where he served as chief financial officer. In 2012 the Kaplans donated a collection of rare Americana and Early American Judaica books and documents.
Rainforest Trust
Writer and actor Seth MacFarlane gave $1 million through his Seth MacFarlane Foundation to back Rainforest Trust’s Conservation Action Fund, which works to prevent deforestation and protect habitat, work that is vital for the health, and the future, of the planet.
MacFarlane is best known as a comedian and the creator of the Family Guy TV show. He is also a film and television producer.
