State of Philanthropy 2006: Creating Dialogue for Tomorrow’s Movements, explores today’s “realities of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector” from a progressive perspective. In the first of 12 essays, David R. Jones, chief executive officer of the Community Service Society of New York, and David Campbell, assistant professor of public administration at the State University of New York at Binghamton, broadly discuss the role of philanthropy in American society, specifically the responsibility of foundations to aid low-income people. In addition, they examine recent debates in philanthropy, discussing the regulation of foundations’ annual payout rates and the obligations of tax-exempt organizations to society, and offering four questions to spur further discussion. Essays by other contributors examine donor-advised funds, nonprofit health organizations, charities that have strayed too far into politics, state regulation of foundations, and other topics.
