The Joy of Fundraising: How to Stop Suffering and Start Enjoying Asking for Money for Your Favorite Cause
by Terry Axelrod

Though fund raisers may feel awkward or even rude asking donors for money, they shouldn’t, writes Terry Axelrod, founder and chief executive officer of Benevon, a fund-raising consulting company. She proposes a shift in thinking about raising money, and urges charities to “leave behind the myth of scarcity for a context of abundance.”

Ms. Axelrod insists that fund raisers should start from the idea that there is plenty to go around and that “individuals are looking for ways to express their caring, appreciation, and generosity by supporting worthwhile organizations and causes they truly believe in.”

The book has three sections: “Shift Your Thinking,” which discusses how to re-imagine fund raising as enjoyable; “Shift Your Focus,” which offers ways to highlight the organization’s mission and locate potential donors; and “Shift Your Actions,” which suggests practical steps for approaching donors.
