Gifts Roundup: Trumps Announce Recipients of $1 Million for Hurricane Relief

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by The Chronicle:
President Trump and first lady Melania Trump named 12 charities that will receive portions of the $1 million they pledged on September 1 to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
It will be divided up as follows: $300,000 apiece for the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, $100,000 each for Samaritan’s Purse and Reach Out America, and $25,000 apiece for eight other groups.
Babson College
Robert and Jan Weissman pledged $36.3 million for various programs including a new building.
Mr. Weissman co-founded Cognizant Technology Solutions, a consulting company. He is a former chairman and chief executive of Dun & Bradstreet Corporation. He graduated from Babson in 1964.
Including this newest donation, the Weissmans have given the college a total of $100 million over the years.
University of Texas at Austin
Steven Hicks gave $25 million to the School of Social Work, which will be named for him.
Of the total, $10 million will endow scholarships, another $10 million will enhance education programs, and the remaining $5 million will be used to match donations from others.
Mr. Hicks leads the investment firm Capstar Partners. Previously he founded Capstar Broadcasting and co-founded SFX Broadcasting. He is vice chairman of the Board of Regents at the University of Texas System.
Bowdoin College
Philip Schiller and Kim Gassett-Schiller donated $10 million to expand the college’s Coastal Studies Center, which will be named for them. The money will go toward a new laboratory; modernized classrooms; and new housing and dining facilities for students, faculty, visiting scholars.
Phil Schiller is senior vice president for worldwide marketing at Apple and a member of the company’s executive team. The couple’s son Mark is a member of the Bowdoin class of 2017.
Justin J. Watt Foundation
Charles Butt gave $5 million to football player J.J. Watt’s fund to help Hurricane Harvey survivors.
Mr. Butt owns the San Antonio supermarket chain HEB Grocery Company and is a major donor to education programs in Texas. Mr. Watt plays for the Houston Texans.
Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
Warner and Carol Henry donated $1.5 million to endow the orchestra’s principal oboe position.
Mr. Henry retired as head of his family’s Henry Wine Group, a company that manages the storage and delivery of wines. It merged with the Winebow Group last year.
