Ask Without Fear: A Simple Guide to Connecting Donors With What Matters to Them Most, by Marc A. Pitman, helps board members, volunteer fund raisers, and charity staff members learn to enjoy asking for money. Mr. Pitman, founder of FundraisingCoach.com, which offers advice and other information for fund raisers, writes that asking for donations can be a way of “helping people connect their finances with their passions,” and outlines his plan for fund raising. The first step is research, which involves looking into a prospective donor’s background and figuring out how much they can give, what they are interested in, and how generous they have been in the past. Next, fund raisers should engage with the donors to learn about them and tell them about the organization. The third step is to ask for money, and the final step is showing “love,” or appreciation, to the prospective donors — whether they make a gift or not. Mr. Pitman also writes chapters on common fund-raising fallacies, donor relations, and resources for further information.
