Holding an Auction to Raise Money

Shake the Money Tree: How to Produce a Winning Fundraising Event With a Live and Silent Auction, by Richard O’Keef, offers advice for both professional auctioneers and amateur fund raisers. Mr. O’Keef writes that including a little “show biz” at the auction — music, sound effects, and glasses of champagne for the winning bidders — keeps the audience amused and engaged, and an emotional appeal, delivered effectively, can bring in the bids. He provides a detailed checklist to help organizers stay on schedule, and discusses how to keep volunteers motivated, create a budget, decide on and find goods that will sell, assign items to silent or live auctions, bring back big bidders from previous events, and thank both volunteers and guests after the auctions are over.
