Hollywood Producer Ryan Murphy and Spouse Give $10 Million to Children’s Hospital LA (Gifts Roundup)

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by the Chronicle:

Stanford Law School

William A. Franke gave $25 million to endow and expand the law school’s global law program, which will be named for him.

Franke founded the private equity firm Indigo Partners, which invests primarily in airlines and related companies. He currently serves as chairman of both Wizz Air and Frontier Airlines. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the university in 1959 and an LLB in 1961.

University of the Arts

The late Campbell’s Soup heiress, Dorrance Hamilton, left $25 million to the university which will help launch a $50 million capital campaign.

Hamilton, who died in 2017, was a granddaughter of Dr. John T. Dorrance, who created the process for condensing soup. He bought the Campbell Soup Company from his uncle in 1914.


Dorrance Hamilton was a longtime trustee of the university and had given the institution a previous $25 million gift in 2007. She gave to a variety of nonprofits during her lifetime and landed on the Chronicle’s annual Philanthropy 50 list of big donors in 2005.

University of Maryland Medical Center

Leonard and Roslyn Stoler donated $25 million to expand the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center with a new building that will provide technologically advanced care for cancer patients.

Leonard Stoler founded the Len Stoler Automotive Group, which operates car dealerships in the Baltimore area and in New York.

Lehigh University

Kevin and Lisa Clayton gave $20 million to renovate and expand the University Center, which will be renamed the Clayton University Center at Packer Hall.

Kevin Clayton retired as director and principal of Oaktree Capital Management in July 2014. He served as interim president of Lehigh for the 2014-15 academic year.


He earned a bachelor of arts degree in government from the university in 1984 and has been a trustee at various times since 1993. In 2017, he became chairman of Lehigh’s Board of Trustees.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

The television and film producer and director Ryan Murphy, and his husband, David Miller, donated $10 million for a professorship in Surgical Oncology, and to endow a fund for neuroblastoma treatment and research in the hospital’s Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases.

Murphy created or produced the television series Nip/Tuck, Glee, and American Horror Story, and directed the 2010 film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s popular memoir Eat, Pray, Love.

Miller is a photographer. Their son Ford was treated at the hospital for neuroblastoma, a cancer that most often affects children.

Dartmouth College

Scott and Lisa Stuart gave $10 million for engineering and computer science programs that forge connections between the two fields and emphasize project-focused design learning.


Scott Stuart is co-founder and managing partner of the investment firm Sageview Capital, based in Greenwich, Conn.; he graduated from Dartmouth in 1981. The couple have one child who graduated from Dartmouth in 2016, and another who will graduate in 2020.

Audubon Society

Audubon Board chairman, Maggie Walker, donated $5 million to develop new programs, approaches, and activities across Audubon’s network of centers in the areas of conservation, youth leadership and development, and community engagement.

Walker is the widow of Doug Walker who co-founded Walker, Richter and Quinn, a 1980s era Seattle software company that helped businesses form and integrate their computer systems. He died while hiking in 2016.
