The Board Building Cycle: Nine Steps to Finding, Recruiting, and Engaging Nonprofit Board Members, Second Edition, by Berit M. Lakey, emphasizes the importance of carefully searching for new trustees. Ms. Lakey, a consultant, provides a guide for nominating committees, and details each of the nine steps she says are key to finding effective and committed board members, including identifying what kind of person is needed, cultivating relationships with prospective board members, outlining responsibilities, evaluating board performance, and acknowledging achievements. The appendices discuss three case studies of common predicaments nonprofit boards encounter: figuring out where to start a search, dealing with problematic trustees, and creating a diverse board. A CD-ROM includes a PowerPoint presentation entitled “Presenting: Board Orientation” and eight documents described in the book, such as a form for rating candidates for a trustee position and a board-meeting evaluation form.
