Nonprofit Essentials: The Development Plan
by Linda Lysakowski
Many charities need to go beyond planning special events and writing grant proposals and instead focus on public relations, capital campaigns, planned giving, and other aspects of fund raising, writes Linda Lysakowski, president of Capital Venture, a fund-raising consulting firm.
Instead of focusing too narrowly on one source of financial support, “board members and other fund-raising volunteers need to have clear-cut goals and understand the basic psychology of philanthropy, as well as have a basic knowledge of fund-raising techniques that have proven successful,” she writes.
Ms. Lysakowski offers a guide to creating a comprehensive development plan, beginning with organizational self-assessment — “Does the organization have a development office? Is the CEO involved in fund raising?” — and describing each stage of creating and tailoring the program.
The book concludes with a discussion of how to analyze the successes and failures of the plan and how to improve it in the future.
Each chapter includes sample documents, helpful tips, worksheets, real-world examples, and short summaries of the most important lessons.
