Getting the Best From Your Board: An Executive’s Guide to a Successful Partnership, by Sherill K. Williams and Kathleen A. McGinnis, lays out six rules to help chief executive officers work effectively with their boards of directors. Each chapter focuses on a different rule, such as “cultivate relationships” and “facilitate a balance in the partnership,” describes why each is important, suggests good habits to cultivate and bad habits to avoid, and includes two essays on the chapter’s theme — one from a chief executive officer’s perspective, and another from the chairman of the board’s. Six appendices include a sample of a contract laying out expectations for board members, which can be customized; a sample survey to help executive directors gather information about board members’ experiences; and a list of questions to get board members thinking creatively.
