New Leaders at Nuclear Threat Initiative and San Diego’s Jewish Community Foundation

Nuclear Threat Initiative
Ernest Moniz, former U.S. secretary of energy, was named chief executive of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a nonprofit that seeks to reduce the risk of nuclear, biological, radiological, chemical, and cyber attacks. He will succeed Senator Sam Nunn, who co-founded the nonprofit with the philanthropist Ted Turner. Mr. Moniz will also serve as co-chairman of the nonprofit’s board with Mr. Nunn and Mr. Turner.
Mr. Moniz served as energy secretary under President Obama starting in May 2013 and was previously undersecretary of the energy department during the Clinton administration. He will join the nonprofit in June from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is a part-time professor of physics and special adviser to MIT’s president.
Communications Network
Sean Gibbons, former executive director, has been appointed chief executive.
Hennepin Theatre Trust
Mark Nerenhausen was appointed chief executive of the arts organization, succeeding Tom Hoch, who stepped down in February after more than 20 years at the helm. Mr. Nerenhausen is the founding director of the Janklow Arts Leadership Program and a professor of practice at Syracuse University.
Inova Loudoun Hospital
Deborah Addo, chief executive of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, will lead Inova Loudoun Hospital. She will succeed Patrick Walters, who is retiring.
Japanese American National Museum
Ann Burroughs, who has served as interim CEO since June last year, was appointed permanently to the post.
Jewish Community Foundation San Diego
Beth Sirull, chief executive of Pacific Community Ventures, will lead the foundation.
Other notable appointments
Artealia Gilliard will become the Nathan Cummings Foundation’s first director of communications. She was previously deputy assistant secretary of transportation policy at the Department of Transportation during the Obama administration.
Beeta Jahedi, senior director of learning and programs at San Diego Grantmakers, was appointed director of strategy and communications at Tow Foundation.
Larry Lieberman, chief operating officer and cofounder of Dynamite Labs, a mobile software developer, was appointed chief operating officer at Charity Navigator.
Kimberley Lubin, senior director of development for OB-GYN newborn medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will become chief development officer at Franciscan Children’s, a pediatric rehabilitation center in Massachusetts.
Kent McGuire, chief executive of Southern Education Foundation, will serve as director of the education program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Bill Rodriguez, chief medical officer at the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics, a global health nonprofit based in Geneva, Switzerland, was appointed managing director at the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation.
Dan Sharpe, director of community leadership and nonprofit effectiveness, was promoted to vice president for community research and grants management at Columbus Foundation.
Deanna Van Hersh, interim vice president for programs at the Kansas Health Foundation, was appointed permanently to the position.
Barbara Wong will join Barnes Foundation as director of community engagement. She has served as executive director of Providence CityArts for Youth for 16 years.
Departures
Thomas Wilcox, CEO of the Baltimore Community Foundation, plans to retire after 17 years at the helm.
Legacies
Noreen Fraser, a television producer who helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars to fight cancer, died March 27 after a 16-year battle with the disease. She was 63. Ms. Fraser became an activist after her breast-cancer diagnosis and co-founded the charity Stand Up to Cancer, which put on a series of star-studded telethons to support research efforts.
