How Nonprofits Helped America Vote: 2006, by Kathryn Clabby, discusses nonprofit efforts to defend voters’ rights, protect the integrity of elections, and expand and inform the voting population. The publication examines charities’ efforts to fight voter-identification laws, arguing that those rules disproportionately affect immigrants and minorities, and lower voter turnout. Another section discusses how one group registered 540,000 voters for the 2006 midterm elections, and suggests that charities support pending legislation that would criminalize tactics that mislead or intimidate voters. The report also includes a list of nonprofit-advocacy resources that are available online.
