Building Communities: Autonomous Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer People of Color Organizations in the U.S., by Robert Espinoza, analyzes the information provided by 84 such groups about their location, mission, budget, strategies, and other characteristics. The study found that 68 percent of the charities have annual budgets of $50,000 or less, and 62 percent have no paid staff members. Foundations gave $2.9-million to the organizations in 2005, up from $1.2-million in 2002, but 69 percent of the charities reported that they received no government money as part of their 2007 annual income. Finally, the report includes 10 recommendations for grant makers, and contact information for the 84 organizations that were surveyed.
