Artist Space Development: Financing, by Chris Walker, culls key lessons about advocating for and developing residential and professional spaces for artists, drawing from projects in seven U.S. cities. Examining how the projects were planned, promoted, financed, regulated, and supported, the report offers advice for foundations, nonprofit groups, and other leaders interested in bringing artists and other creative people to urban areas. For example, the report suggests that planning mixed-use developments and community outreach, such as arts-education programs, help to “demonstrate the community value of artists’ spaces.” The publication also describes sources of financial support, zoning and management issues, construction and operating costs, tax credits, and garnering political and civic support.
