Nonprofits Made Easy
by David H. Bangs Jr.
A guide for leaders of small or new nonprofit groups, this book offers advice about starting a charity, hiring staff members, financial management, strategic planning, legal matters, fund raising, and other matters.
In 10 sections, David H. Bangs Jr., founder of Upstart Publishing Company, provides tips for both experienced and aspiring executive directors.
In the first chapter, “Before Startup,” he suggests that, for a year before opening the organization, people who are considering creating a nonprofit group should keep on hand a three-ring binder to jot down ideas. The chapter discusses the risks of operating a charity — personal, business, and financial — and where to gain experience in charity management. A table describes the difference between kinds of nonprofit groups, and the author includes blank checklists that can be copied and personalized.
Three chapters focus on managing people, including legal requirements, recruitment, time management, salary, promotions, and dealing with problem employees. These chapters provide examples of charts, checklists, and forms to keep staff members organized and the charity running smoothly.
The guide concludes with three appendices: bylaws for a nonprofit corporation, Internal Revenue Service documents for charities, and an executive-director evaluation form for a board of directors or other committee to complete.
