Arts and Culture in the Metropolis: Strategies for Sustainability, by Kevin F. McCarthy, Elizabeth Heneghan Ondaatje, and Jennifer L. Novak, examines arts organizations in 11 metropolitan areas. This study, commissioned by the William Penn Foundation and the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, aims to identify and describe the changing political and economic environment for arts organizations in large cities, and recommends ways to sustain and strengthen cultural life, particularly in Philadelphia. The authors of the study look at the history and context of arts organizations in metropolitan areas, their financial support and role in the community, the services they provide, and other characteristics, patterns, and trends. The study also focuses on arts organizations in Philadelphia, and explores threats and opportunities for those groups.
