U. of Central Florida Lands $13 Million for Athletic Scholarships (Gifts Roundup)

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by the Chronicle:
University of Central Florida
Gary and Barbara Bryant pledged $13 million to establish the Gary and Barbara Bryant Family Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will endow scholarships for student athletes at UCF.
Gary Bryant has led several life- and health-insurance companies in the Orlando area. He is a former CEO of Marquette National Life Insurance Company and of Disabled Veterans Insurance Careers, a nonprofit in Fort Myers, Fla.
Worcester Art Museum
Jean McDonough gave $10 million through her C. Jean & Myles McDonough Charitable Foundation to endow the museum and support it operations.
McDonough has a long association with the museum and gave $4 million in 2015 to endow the museum’s directorship. She is the widow of Myles McDonough, who founded the FLEXcon Company, a pressure-sensitive adhesives manufacturer. He died in 2012.
Moore College of Art and Design
Jane and David Walentas donated $5 million to create the Walentas Visionary Woman Scholarships, a part of the college’s Visionary Woman Honors Program, which provides financial support and mentorship to students inside and outside of the classroom.
David Walentas is a billionaire real-estate developer who, through his Two Trees Management company, developed the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn.
Jane Walentas is an artist who served for many years as an art director in advertising for the Elizabeth Arden, Avon, and Estee Lauder cosmetic companies. She graduated from Moore in 1966 and serves on its Board of Trustees. She is well-known in New York art circles for restoring and operating Jane’s Carousel, a historic 1922 carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Tulane University School of Architecture
Jean Strauss Mintz gave $2 million to create the Saul A. Mintz Global Research Studios, a new program aimed at providing students with opportunities to work internationally on global issues.
Mintz, a 1955 graduate of the university’s Newcomb College, is the widow of Saul Mintz, an architect who became a commercial real-estate developer and co-founded Sunbelt Manufacturing, a plastic-products company.
He graduated from the Tulane School of Architecture in 1953 and died in 2012.
University of Akron
Keith and Stephanie Cline donated nearly $1.3 million to launch and endow the Athletics Leadership Academy, which will offer students leadership training, career development, and opportunities in community engagement and personal enrichment.
Keith Cline Jr. leads CorePoint Lodging, a real-estate investment trust that owns a portfolio of 310 hotels and other properties throughout the United States. The Clines are University of Akron alumni. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1992 and a master’s in business administration in 2002, and she earned a bachelor of arts in social work in 1994.
