Linking Colleges to Communities: Engaging the University for Community Development, by Steve Dubb and Ted Howard, argues that “the question really is not so much whether universities should be linked to the outside world, but how.” The publication examines universities’ engagement with their communities and how state and federal government and foundations have influenced higher-education institutions. The report looks at the long history of politicians’ involvement in higher education, how universities can collaborate with communities and the wider society, and what efforts are currently under way to link institutions with the cities and towns where they are located. Chapters suggest ways to encourage students, faculty members, and university leaders to participate in community-service projects, and discuss the future of the “engaged university.”
