Advice for Charity Managers and Trustees

Running Nonprofit Organizations: Fifteen Essential Steps and Concepts for Board Members and Managers
by Herbert Heaton

Mr. Heaton, an accountant and a consultant to non-profit groups, begins his 15 steps by discussing how to acquire start-up funds for a non-profit organization and to craft a mission statement. In the second section, he outlines management techniques, including how to exercise control over the organization and encourage responsibility among employees.

Managers and trustees of charities should clearly define each employee’s role, he writes, as that will make it easier to delegate work.

The third section contains advice on how to recruit and retain workers and how to develop and approve programs.

Lastly, Mr. Heaton provides methods for measuring an organization’s performance. He contends that successful organizations foster a sense of discovery daily. “Board members, managers, employees and volunteers must not be locked in windowless boxes by job descriptions, established routines or their own mindsets,” he writes.
