From Making a Profit to Making a Difference: How to Launch Your New Career in Nonprofits
by Richard M. King

Business professionals who want to start a new career at a non-profit organization can find guidance in this book.

Richard M. King, president of Kittleman and Associates, a Chicago executive-search and management-consulting firm for non-profit groups, begins by identifying business skills that are sought after in charities. He notes that flexibility, resourcefulness, and leadership ability are predictors of managerial success in both non-profit organizations and businesses.

The following chapters guide readers in matching their career goals with their charitable interests and in writing cover letters and resumes.

One arena receives almost no attention from Mr. King: foundations, which he calls a “bad bet” for people leaving the business world. He writes that foundation jobs are few and that most grant makers tend to be highly selective and somewhat insular in their hiring practices.

The book includes a reference section that features directories of recruiters, fund-raising and consulting firms, and professional philanthropic associations.
